A US trademark search is an important step before filing a US trademark application and is essential to prevent conflicts with trademarks that have already been registered.

In this article, I will explain step by step how to search US trademark rights using Amazon Echo, an AI SPEAKER that is popular recently, and show you how to filter the search trademark search results based on product/service categories.

1. Go to the trademark search screen on the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website

As a first step, you must first access the USPTO's TRADE MARK SEARCH system. How to access the US Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO) trademark search screen is to access our previous content (rink(←Click here)

2. Change the default search “General search” to “wordmark”

It's probably set to “General search” on the same screen as above, but click to change it to “wordmark.”

If you change to “wordmark”, it doesn't just search for a phrase; it also prints the search results with designs related to the search term.

3. Type “Amazon Echo” in the search box and click the Submit Query button

Now type “Amazon Echo” in the search box where “Search for marks that contains a specific word” is displayed on the right and click the magnifying glass icon.

On the search results page, you can find a list of trademarks associated with Amazon Echo.

4. Filtering search results

If you select a specific trademark from the trademark search results, you will be directed to that trademark's details page. You can check product/service classification information here. This classification information plays an important role in trademark applications

If your trademark search results are high, you can filter them in the following ways:

  1. Product/Service Classification Filtering: Using the filter options at the top of the page on the left side of the search results, you can set only those trademarks that correspond to specific products or services to be displayed.
  2. Status filtering: You can filter results based on the trademark's status (registered, pending, rejected, etc.).

More effectively, you can also filter only the Amazon Echo trademarks corresponding to the desired product category by clicking expert in the upper right corner.

A trademark cannot be thought of as separate from a product/service.

Even if the same trademark as the Amazon Echo you want to register is found, your trademark Amazon Echo can be registered if the product/service specified in the searched trademark is not related to your product/service.

If so, how do I check my product/service category?

5. How to check the product/service category

To find out more about the classification of goods/services, use the USPTO's ID Manual.

  1. USPTO ID Manual Visit the website
  1. Type a specific product or service (such as “smart speakers” or “Amazon Echo”) in the search box.
